Russia has become a PASSAGE for travelers taking the Transsiberian railway to go from Europe to Mongolia, China, Japan and vice versa.
BAIKAL lake (the deepest freshwater lake in the world) is almost in the middle of Russia, near the Mongolian border.
OLKHON island is almost in the center of the lake Baikal.
Visitors who happen to come here once, always want to come back. It was also my case. First time I came here with a French friend of mine in 1999. Seven years later I returned here from France with my wife (we met in Paris).
Now we expect here our second child to be see this beautiful NATURE on the MYSTICAL island OLKHON.
Those of you who read these lines may wish to come explore these areas, so... WELCOME!!!

Yannick et Sophie have left a reference: "We met Sergey in Olkhon Island : he rang the bells for us and we could try to ring ourselves!
He is very interesting, spiritual and has a good sens of humour. He gave us some advices about the Island (an amazing place!). If you go to Olkhon, Sergey is the person you MUST meet!!

My girlfriend and I CS'd with Sergey and it was great. We unfortunately didnt spend too much time together but had a wonderful experience all the same. Sergey greeted us warmly and I could tell he was a great guy with a kind heart and a good sense of humor. We did the things Sergey suggested we do on the island and even got to ring the bells!! Thank you Sergey and we wish you all the best for the future.

Sergey is such a person who You meet and You know at once that You can trust him with Your life. Plenty of goodness and gentleness is in his eyes. Sergey was extremely hospitable with us and really helpful. And the place where he lives with his Family is not only beautiful but also so magic. Music from the church, bells, Marta & August - two goats... Everything is so wonderful. Love and tranquility are in the air all around.

Upon my arrival in Khuzhir I immediately recognised the bells, and walked towards them. I was warmly welcomed by Sergey, and promptly given food and a place to stay.
Thank you all for the hospitality, the food, the shoes and the blessings. It was a truly inspiring experience, and I would have loved to stay a little longer to get to know everybody better. I hope some day to be able to return and hear the sound of those bells again.

When arrived on Olkhon, we saw the church next to Sergey's house already from far away. We were warmly welcomed by him and his wife, their child, another painter, the two goats and the lovely cat. The place is very beautiful and it made us feel kind of free.
We enjoyed our stay a lot, it's a pity that we could not stay longer.
Thank you very much for your hospitality, the nice atmosphere, the place to sleep and the delicious omul fish!
Visit us in our hometown Dresden, otherwise we will have to come back ;-)

I can't say how grateful I am to meet Sergey who kindly offered many helps to a total stranger like me when I needed them the most. Without his help I would't be able to stay on Olkhon Island ,my dream place, for two weeks, and meet and work with many wonderful people in Khuzhir. ...our guests are "gone with the wind", so we have a small "summer hut" attached to our house where you may stay. There is an electric heater to warm the interior during the night but it's rather cool if you don't mind. The price of the marchroutka is 500rbls - 300km - one way ticket! The telephones are 614961 or 720007. If you dont speak russian we better call them to book one place for you (because they don't speak English very well). By the way, where do you stay in Irkutsk? If it's not too far from the center, they may come and pick you up. Have a look at http://www.olkhon.info/en/olkhon/route.htm with a detailed may of the trip.

As I can see, the direct marshrutka to Olkhon doesn't go on Mondays, so I would then come on Tuesday, 15th.
The summer hut sounds great. If there are enough blankets (unfortunately I don't have a sleeping bag with me) I don't mind the cold.
In Irkutsk I stay at a Couchsurfer's place, not sure, where exactly she lives. But I can get to the avtovokzal anyway without a problem to catch the bus.

Just last week we have obtained Russian „90-days visas“, at last, and we have also complete train tickets from Bratislava to Moscow (arr. 4th May) & MOSCOW – > ABAKAN (what purchased for us our Russian friend just in Saturday), so we will go directly into ABAKAN where we arrived at 8th May morning by night-train. Because one friend from Tuva promised me to pick up us at the Railway Station with her car, so I hope that will be not problem to travel from Abakan directly over Abaza and Ak Dovurak into Kyzyl.
We are planed spent all May in Tuva and continue around End of May over KRASNOYARSK into IRKUTSK where we spent 2 weeks with trip around the Baykal area, visiting there the OLKHON ISLAND and the holy places and participate at the local ethno-cultural festival,
I hope we will meet you there and see your city and country in JUNE --- We do not want commercial accommodation, hotel / dormitory, BUT ONLY any private hospitality FREE OF CHARGE!!! For this reason I use CouchSurfing what is created for Free Accommodations. So let me know if all is right!

Meeting Serguey can't let you unchanged! Although we spent just one night with him in his beautiful wooden house, we felt at once that we were with a friend. He made us so quickly confortable as though we've been knowing him for years! I am really happy to have met him and somehow I'm quite sure that I will come back in Olkhon where there is so much to see, and so many people who really worth knowing!

Hello Sergey,
We have been communicating about Couch Surfing recently. There are some changes to what we previously arranged. I hope it is not too much of an inconvenience. Due to our train schedule, we'll be staying one day in Irkutsk at the Baikaler Hostel. We will ask them how to get to Olkhon Island. We would like to stay with you Sunday June 26 through Thursday June 30 if that is possible. I can send a request through Couch Surfing, too, if it will help you organize better.
We will be starting our journey very soon in June (we will be in Japan for a few weeks). We will not have a mobile phone but we will have limited access to the internet. I can check my email occasionally so feel free to write back at this email address.

You have been recommended to me by another CS'er, Eker from Spain whom I met in Mongolia. It sounds like anyone who stays with you has an amazing experience so I would love to surf with you if possible! I will be arriving in Irkutsk between the dates 11th June - 13th, and will go straight from there to Olkhon island. I would love to stay for 3 - 4 days if possible...

Passports and visas are ready.
Prepare a trip is already to be on vacation ......
This year we will see if the sky of Mongolia is more blue than in our area, The south of France ......
And we're not in hurry, We Will take the train ....
This long trip requires some stops. (to relax, meet people of course! times to share and discuss, to cook, to visit .. listen to stories ...)
We thought it would be a shame to be in Irkutsz, without visiting Olkhon (the island seems to be a jewel and Lake Baikal its case ?)
We arrive in Irkutz 13 of June and we plan to go Olkhon the next day 14 of June and stay maybe until on 17? or 18 of june maxi. (We must leave Russia before the end of our visas 20 of June).
And when we read your website and your references,(a lot of things have been told)but sorry our curiosity is stronger:to know more ,about people who live here and their history,about the lake...And wake up with the sound of bells(like you play),it's a perfect start and a great momment,we think.
We know that this p?riod is maybe difficult for you with a lot of request..1,2,3 or 4 nights ,as you want.Why not just a place arround,if the weather is good,we have a tarp(like a shelter) and sleeping bag.

How have you been lately?
You will be departing for SP soon if i am not wrong!
Me still in Mongolia, leaving in two days for Beijing.
It's nice over here. There is a national celebration these days and the city is all dressed up and cheerful and that gives a good opportunity for photographing.
I suppose up there it will be quite busy as well. Full season is on.
How is the house and playground going?

Good to get news from you, fili mas! I am now in St Petersbourg for the Festival of the Orthodoxe Music. People from 15 countries have come to participate in this project. Anastacia, Sviatoslav an Ljuba are in Olkhon where they are helped by our friends who witness the growth of the playground http://bogoroditsa-olkhon.prihod.ru/news/guid/8174 that is blessed by your volonteer efforts and good will. People keep on coming regardless my absence. I believe that since the good positive energies are set for a good business, personal engagement of the initiators is no longer necessary as the good forces are attracted to accomplish the started affair. Je serai avec mon ami Nicolas (aussi). Il est suisse, a 46 ans, et c'est un tres bon ami a moi. Nous nous sommes rencontres au Tajikistan, ou j'ai vecu pendant un an et demi. Lui, il y vit encore.
Nous parlons tous les deux Russe, enfin, disons que nous faisons beaucoup d'efforts pour communiquer en Russe :)
Nous avons tous les deux des tentes, et une immense joie de vivre!!
Je suis egalement en contact avec un autre ami de Pierre, le pere Evgeny de Kemerovo. Il va faire une colonie de vacances (lager) a Olkhon a partir du 7 aout. J'espere aussi le rencontrer. Il m'a indique que vous pourriez me montrer ou sera son camp.

with a friend and we were lucky enough to join a French evening starring

Hello Sergey !
My girlfriend and I are leaving France the 15 of September for a 2 years trip around Asia and Oceania. We'll take the train in Moscow to get to Irkutsk and Ba?kal Lake. That's why we're looking for accomodation there with local people. I've read the article on lemonde.fr written by two french travellers and he makes us feel that we had to stop there !
We would actually be three cos a friend of us is coming with us for the first three weeks of our trip (to travel by train throughout Russia!) Sleeping in tents would be good for us as well !
I don't know exactly when we're gonna be in Olkhon but it should be around the 24th.

kak dela ? :) My name is Roua and I'm from Bucharest, Romania. Together with my friend, Doru (http://www.couchsurfing.org/people/doruoprisan/), I am traveling to discover Russia and do the great Transsiberian train journey. I am documenting the trip, keeping an online journal about the experience we have and my friend does the pictures.
We will arrive in Irkutsk on the 5th of September and then hope to catch a bus to Olkhon Island. We are leaving from Moscow in... an hour actually ! :)
We are very anxious to see the Olkhon island because we read a lot of good things about it and can't wait to see with our own eyes the beauty of Baikal lake.
We hope to see you on the island and maybe if you can, to host us ! :) Sorry it is such a short notice (because we will be in the train until the 5th so we won't be able to read your reply). I don't think we will have internet until we will arrive on the island but we hope you will be able to host us. :)

Hosting a French/Swiss couple ?
Hello/Priviet/salut Sergey !
My name is Alexis, I’m a French 30-years-old guy living in Switzerland.
I quit my job about 6 months ago and am currently on a loooonnng journey, travelling with my girlfriend Petra. We are somehow on our « way back home » from Alaska, to Switzerland, where we should arrive by Christmas. Until then, we've visited Alaska, Japan, Kamchatka, China, Mongolia...and we’re now in Siberia.
Currently in Irkutsk, we plan to visit and see Baikal lake area and its surroundings for a week, and especially the Orkhon Island for 3-4 days, before coming back & taking the transiberian railway to Tomsk (then Ekaterinburg, Moscow, etc…).
We’re really looking forward to visiting the island, making some hiking and/or biking where it’s possible, …maybe improving our russian language skills (Petra knows a little bit of Russian, but my vocabulary is now limited to ab. 20 words, so we need to improve ! On the other hand you could practice your french if you want !),etc… And we must admit that it would be a great honor/pleasure to join the “Philoxen - Refuge des routards” for a couple of days !
So, what do you think ?
Would you be interested in hosting us for at least 1 or 2 nights ? We have sleeping bags and air mattresses and could easily sleep on the floor if necessary.
We already couch-surfed in many different places during our trip and each time was an excellent experience, we really like this way of travelling with meeting local people and exchanging. By the way, we could even show you a small video of a bell ringer in Petropavlov-Kamchatsky (we saw him at the cathedral, it was excellent !)
We’re looking forward to hearing from you and thank you in advance for your answer.

Hello Sergey,
I am Miguel and I have heard about you from several different people, baring allways in mind that it as been important for them(in different aspects) meeting you along the way.
The last person that reminded me to write you, was Maria from the cosy hostel where I'm staying in Irkutsk.
I've just came from the east side of Baikal, where I was trekking and hitchhiking.
I was not considering to go back, but everyone seems to tell me that olkhon is wonderfull, and I do fell that I was far to worried in catching the next ride, instead of fullfill the experience of Baikal.
Ive been travelling around Asia for about one year, and am going back home, Portugal.
I just changed my mind, and decided to go to Olkhon today and I know this is no way to ask for accomodation on the same day, and I'm not even sure if I'll have a place on the bus, assuming I do, I'm not sure I'll get at the island at a decent time for you.
Anyway, I'm going your way and I'll be glad to meet you and stay with you if possible. I also know you probably have already received messages from the others that are leaving that way this same day.

Hey Sergey, we were wondering if we could stay with you for a couple of days?
Dear Sergey,
Perhaps we should start with a small introduction about who we are?
My girlfriend and I hitchhiked from Belgium to Russia, St-Peterburg. We travelled through Poland, to Riga, to Tallinn, St-Petersburg.. and two days ago we arrived in Moskow.
And that is how our trip will continu the next weeks. A Belgium friend of us, Dries, joined us here in Moskow and on the 15 of October we will board the Transiberian Express in the direction of Ulaan Baator and make a stop along the baikal lake.
To give you an idea of the sequel of our trip, Dries will continue his journey to Vladivostok and we will continue wandering throughout Asia. Untill we've experienced all the seasons change or untill the wind blows us back home. We have no fixed schedule, we only have the urge to see the world without taking any planes. (that is, if you can call it that, the only rule we live by for the moment)
Our arrival is a little bit uncertain but it should be the 24th or the 25th of october. Would that suit you? And could we stay for 3 nights? ( also very flexible )
Thank you very much for taking the time to read our request. We were truly inspired by reading about your refuge and we hope we can contribute to it in any way possible. One more question, what weather can we expect to experience during our stay at the end of october ?

sure do you remember when we were a year ago on Olkhon, and our travel group visited your church. One man of the group has asked you to celebrate a Holy Mass, you did a short prayer for us. This man is Wilfried, and he made a photo presentation "The Lake Baikal,the blue eye of the earth", at the high school for adult education. The resonance was very good, and it had given a donation for the pastor on the island of Olkhon, that means for you, for your community. Wilfrid has a question to you, how he can transfer this money to you?
We send in January to a travel agency in Irkutsk by "Western Union" this is very easy, fast, and cheap. For example, for this money transfer we needed only:
1) name of person which will collect money
2) Address
3) phone number
Mayby this option will be OK for you, than you can give us details, or you have an another idea?

Merci beaucoup Sergei pour ces quelques jours passés sur l'île d'Olkhon
qui sans ta générosité, n'auraient pas été aussi sympathiques!
Je me souviendrai longtemps de cette nuit sous la grange autour d'un feu de
camp et avec une guitare pour alimenter nos chants espagnols, anglais,
russes et français!
